Hedgerows
How does the fruit in orchards get pollinated? Fruit trees start to bloom around February and continue on to May. Often bee-keepers will bring in bees to make sure that the trees are pollinated.
A new/old way is to use hedgerows to sustain pollinators before and after the orchard blooms.
Hedgerows of native plants are being tried out in orchard situations to sustain native and non-native bees which pollinate the fruit.
- Rachel Long (UCCE farm advisor) spoke about native hedgerows at EcoFarm 2018
- Hedgerows turn farm edges into habitat
