I serve as the Vice President of Grievances and Academic Freedom on the Executive Council for the Portland State University chapter of the American Association of University Professors (PSU-AAUP). In this role, I advocate for the rights of faculty and academic professionals while enforcing our Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Our Grievance Committee works to ensure that the university aheres to the CBA and that all members are treated with fairness and due process. Our committees work includes:
Contract Enforcement: Identifying and challenging violations of the CBA ranging from workload disputes to salary inequities.
Advocacy and Support: Providing a confidential space for members to discuss concerns about their working conditions or administrative actions.
Representation: Accompanying members to meetings with administration to ensure their voice is heard and their rights are protected.
Conflict Resolution: Working to resolve disputes at the lowest level possible, while being prepared to move to formal grievances or arbitration when necessary.
One of the most important protection for our members is the Weingarten Right. This right was established by the Supreme Court and grant an employee the legal right to union representation during an investigatory interview or any meeting with an administrator that you believe may lead to disciplinary action. See more information here about the Weingarten Rule's.
Beyond grievance work, I defend faculty rights against censorship, political interference, and administrative overreach in teaching and scholarship. I work with members to educate about the intersection of their legal protections and university policies. It is critical that faculty feel free to pursue knowledge, conduct research, and engage in the free exchange of ideas without fear of censorship or retaliation.
