The Bystander Effect: Influence of Gender and Group Size
The Bystander Effect: Influence of Gender and Group Size was a fun project in which my group and I got to perform a social experiment. The goal was to see who would help the confederate (actor) in a non-emergency situation. The confederate would walk around a populated area and drop a wallet 10-15 feet away from a bystander. The participants' actions were then tallied on a coding sheet. Our group worked hard to tally the information, and when the information was complete, we used charts to determine the results. Everything our group did to accomplish the goal was written into an APA paper. In the APA paper we explained what we did, our results, what we expected, our hypothesis, our procedure, etc. in detail. The symposium project helped me develop collaboration and initiative. I had to take initiative on parts I knew how to do, assigning specific jobs to do to get the work done. However, there were also times where I was required to collaborate, following my teammates instructions to continue working. I was able to give and take orders. The most challenging part of this project was choosing how to organize ourselves. There was so much to be done at a certain time, but my team was able to overcome it by breaking down the tasks and completing them as a group. Â
