How it began (the idea)
At 13, Roby began composing small musical pieces, ideas and even a few orchestral arrangements on his laptop using TuxGuitar and MuseScore. He didn't know how to sight-read notes, he was guided by intuition, focusing on how lengths and pitches of notes made him feel.
At 15, Roby started recording videos of himself playing guitar and synthesizer, experimenting and learning the chord shapes, timing and singing while playing. This was when he first began thinking about musical arrangement. He watched and tried to copy Otto Waalkes playing guitar, dreaming of professionally recording his own songs. At that point, he had only written three songs, including Sweet Dreams Passing By, his first song.
Roby's real recording journey started in 2017 on a Boss RC-30 Loop Station, where he recorded demo loops of his ideas every two weeks since he didn't live at home. During his high school years from 2015-2019, he could only record on weekends when he returned home. After meeting his partner, Martina, in 2016, he strived to create something musical every day, even if it was just a quick recording on his phone. Excelling in high school gave him plenty of free time to write, compose, and play instruments, knowing that someday he'd record it all and create something meaningful.
Further (the realizations)
In 2019, after graduating high school, Roby moved to Zagreb with Martina. He was accepted into the Music Production Academy (MPA) in Zagreb, where he studied mixing and mastering for 2 years. Graduating from MPA in 2021, he earned qualifications as an audio mixing engineer after the first year, and an audio mastering engineer after the second year. During this time, he used a Cubase LE license provided by the academy, spending a full year experimenting the program's limitations in the house they rented. In 2020, feeling ready to advance professionally, he purchased Cubase 11 Pro to further his career as a producer.
The studio in Zagreb was modified four times before Roby and Martina moved out. Initially it consisted of just a looping station Roby constructed, with his synthesizer and electric guitars connected to the looper, which routed audio back to a Behringer 8-track mixer and out to large Yamaha speakers he'd borrowed from his dad. Later, when he began using a computer for production, he added an Audient iD4 interface to the same mixer setup, allowing him to loop and produce music simultaneously.
After acquiring Yamaha HS8 monitors, he returned his dad's speakers and used HS8 on a table for a few months. Then, with help from his family, he built DIY stands for them. This setup consisted only of his laptop, Audient iD4 and the new monitor setup.
Finally, Roby upgraded his equipment and rearranged furniture as much as the rental allowed. This setup included speakers on their stands, a Zoom LiveTrak L-12 mixer (having passed his Audient iD4 to Martina to explore music independently), his laptop, and a Fender Mustang III v2 amplifier. He also purchased an electronic drum kit for Martina, which appears in the Gray Lives music video.
The microphones Roby used where dynamic Behringer mics, a large-diaphragm condenser with a cardioid pattern (the RØDE NT1-A, used for all vocals in his first album), and Shure SM7 dynamic mic. Later, he added two Sontronics STC-10 microphones for recording acoustic instruments like guitars and drums.
The move (the perfect studio)
After moving back home, Roby— now a professional sound engineer—completely repurposed his former bedroom. With Martina moving in, they needed extra living space, so the couple renovated the attic to serve as their new bedroom. Roby's old bedroom became a fully equipped professional music studio, complete with both acoustic and electronic drums.
The studio was acoustically treated with panels, bass traps, and flutter echo diffusers, along with thick, long curtains to optimize sound quality. The walls were painted a vibrant golden yellow paint, a choice that influenced the studio's atmosphere and subtly reflected in the sound of his recordings from the third album Old-New Album: The End Of The Universe onwards.
Roby owns a versatile collection of instruments, including a 5-string Ivan'S bass, a Yamaha Arius e-piano, a marimba, an old violin, a blue plastic ukulele, two acoustic guitars, his own self-made Red Razorbyll e-guitar, a Fender Stratocaster, a Fender Telecaster in Coral Blue (Tina's 25th birthday present), a 3/4 size classical fretless (white painted) nylon guitar, an acoustic drum set (with Meinl cymbals), an electric drum set called Nitro by Alesis, and various percussion instruments. He also records directly into his laptop using an Alesis V61 MIDI controller. He uses T5-RP Studio Headphones, Yamaha HS8 Studio Monitors, a Zoom LiveTrak 12 as his audio interface, a HP laptop with an Intel i5 Core processor with 16GB of RAM and two 2TB SSD cards. He records with Shure SM57, RØDE NT1-A and Sontronics STC-10 microphones.
