Top button: Popcorn Coals launches hot coals out of the train and onto the ground. Enemies that touch the coals take BURN damage.
Left Button: Bullhorn pushes enemies away from the train, buying the player precious seconds.
Right Button: Ionic Steam clouds threaten flying enemies by damaging them and applying STUN which prevents them shooting for a short time.
Bottom button: Rapid Repairs will patch up some of the train's damage and extend the player's survival.
Magic Spells are some of the player's primary abilities in Engine Defender. Once unlocked, players must use Tokens to purchase upgrades for them. Each upgrade improves the spell's damage, reduces its cooldown, or unlocks a Perk.
These four buttons, situated at the bottom-right of the player's screen, represent the four magic spells. The top spell was recently cast and is now on cooldown. The red cooldown circle shows the player when the spell will be ready to use again.
Spells can be cast at the start of a level, then anytime after their cooldowns expire. There is no mana bar or Spell casting resource to collect.

After several iterations my playtesters and I have finally settled on a layout that looks cool and shows everything the player needs to know to make a decision.
