Ethic Roots Presentation
I have a large family on both sides, but I only grew up with my mother’s family. My mother had two brothers and six sisters, and we were close to all of them. We lived off and on with our grandparents, and it was a wonderful life. I lost my mother twenty-two years ago, so I had to ask my aunts where my grandfather and grandmother were born. I was surprised that they didn’t have a clue. I feel that because of their lack of questioning their parents, we now have lost a part of our history.
When my mother passed away they said that she was starting a family tree, but I haven’t seen it. I know a little bit of my grandparent’s life because when my grandmother was put into a home, she spoke to me about her life. She shared how her parents got married. It wasn’t a romantic story, they just decided to get married and that was it. She said they never dated, they just got married. She told me she lost her father when he was 34 years old. She also told me some stories about her and my grandfather, that too wasn’t a romantic story, because they also just decided to get married because my grandfather was going to help my great-grandmother financially.
My grandfather was sixteen years older than her. He was twenty-nine years old and she was thirteen years old when they got married. I don’t know if it’s a good thing for my grandmother, but my grandfather never looked older then her. I wanted to share this part of my family because I loved these two people so much, they didn’t have a wonderful romantic story, but they were wonderful grandparents. I will always treasure the time I spent with my grandparents. Living with my grandparents was the best part of my childhood. My grandparents still four children at home, but when my mother and all of us children had no place to live, my grandparents always opened their home to us.
