In most cases students are not paid by the host organisation during work placement, they work as volunteers.
Students on industry work placements may work voluntarily, be paid a negotiated amount or receive expenses according to the agreement reached between the employer and the student.
In most cases students are selected by RMIT based on where the student lives in relation to the host organisation.
Host organisations have the option to select the students themselves by asking students to submit application letters and resumes, some even conduct interviews (over the phone or face to face).
In 2018 most students will be available during semester breaks
or one day per week
RMIT students on work placements are covered by RMIT’s Public and Products Liability insurance. The details of this policy, and a Certificate of Currency for the policy, can be provided to you on request.

Work Placement mentors/supervisors complete the logbook in consultation with the student, but do not mark or grade students. The student must receive a satisfactory placement evaluation from the work placement mentor/supervisor to be eligible for assessment in the course.
Students will complete a range assessments including a reflective journal on the placement. (Record Book)
A number of students obtain employment as a result of their placement. Once students complete their placement requirement, you can negotiate any future arrangements directly with students.
Students are expected to meet their obligations to the host organisation in responsible manner. In the event that a placement student is not meeting his or her responsibilities or appears unable to meet minimum performance standards, the employer organisation should immediately contact the RMIT Workplace Coordinator.
The host organisation has the option to terminate the work placement agreement.
