October 31, 2024 - Students in River Falls schools are building robots through hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs. From students at Westside Elementary and Meyer Middle School participating in FIRST LEGO Leagues to high schoolers competing on advanced robotics teams, these programs teach more than just science. They help students develop teamwork, problem-solving skills, and creativity, all while preparing them for future jobs in STEM fields.
In River Falls, students as young as elementary school are taking part in FIRST LEGO League, where they build small robots to solve challenges for competition. Meyer Middle School ensures that the experience continues for those students into 6th grade and beyond. At River Falls High School, students continue their STEM learning by participating on a FIRST Robotics team, where they build larger, more complex robots to compete in local and regional competitions. The students are using real engineering challenges by learning skills such as coding, wiring, and problem-solving.
“We teach students how to work together, manage time, and think critically,” says Nathan McReynolds, Westside Elementary LEGO League club advisor. “These skills will help them be successful in school and their futures.”
The skills students learn in these STEM programs are essential for future jobs. Many industries in the greater River Falls area, such as manufacturing, technology, and engineering, need workers with strong problem-solving and technical skills.
According to Ryan Brill, River Falls High School RoboCats club advisor, the robotics programs go beyond classroom learning. RoboCats was named by students for the robotics team when it was formed three years ago.
“By supporting STEM education today, local businesses help ensure there will be a steady pipeline of talented workers in the future,” says Brill. “These programs are investments not only in students but also in the local economy, helping River Falls remain competitive in a world that increasingly relies on technology and innovation.”
Running successful robotics programs requires resources. The River Falls Robotics Booster Club was recently created to help raise funds and provide support for the LEGO League and high school robotics teams. The club works to cover the costs of robot parts, registration fees, travel expenses, and equipment. These fundraising efforts ensure that every student who wants to join a team has the opportunity to participate, regardless of financial circumstances.
The booster club plays a vital role in bringing together students, families, teachers, and local businesses. Through fundraisers, donations, and sponsorships, the community helps give students access to the tools and experiences for their team.
Students in robotics clubs are also getting involved in the community. They visit local businesses, sharing their passion for STEM education and encouraging financial support for the teams. These interactions help students build confidence and communication skills, showing them the importance of teamwork and leadership.
The River Falls LEGO League and RoboCats teams need assistant coaches to mentor students, especially those with engineering experience. Volunteers help guide students as they build and solve the competition challenges. The teams meet after school.
Adam Dykstra, coach of the Meyer Middle School LEGO League, stated, “Volunteers are vital to our success and inspire students to reach their full potential.”
Tax-deductible donations help cover essential costs such as robot kits, competition fees, and travel expenses. To learn more about the River Falls Robotics Booster Club and how to volunteer and donate, visit their website at https://bit.ly/RFRBC or email RiverFallsRobotics@gmail.com.
