THE FUN PAGE!
Even though the crossword and roaroscope are generally at the bottom of my to-do list for an issue, the fun page is the most popular part of the newspaper.
As a rule, I've tried to incorporate more fun writing into our our opinions section because I've found that readers are more inclined to start with something light. Once they've got the paper open, a pretty page may catch their eye and they might as well read another article!
One day, a man named Matteo Lee sent me an email complaining about his editors. I kid you not, it was one of the funniest things I'd ever read. So I made him a proposition. To apologize for his previous bad experiences, I offered him a column, 200-300 words per issue to write about whatever he wanted as long as it was (mostly) appropriate. The chance I took paid off. Yes, Matty Ice was hilarious, but more than that, people in his network that had never picked up a paper before began reading The Roar. Recently, Matteo sent me another email thanking me for the opportunity. Unfortunately, it was decidedly less funny.
