Do It For The Grain (DIFTG) engages the Ottawa (and surrounding area) photographic community by creating accessible peer-reviewed education and promotion opportunities for all, with particular consideration for underrepresented groups, as we aim to be a rich, diverse, and vibrant organization.
We work toward this by publishing our monthly zine, sharing the work of local artists via social media and exhibitions (both physical and virtual), presenting affordable workshops, offering services and equipment to those in need, and including as broad a range of artists as possible in these endeavours.
To follow through with the latter, and acknowledge the inherent challenges some face, we enable those who are part of priority groups to identify themselves when submitting their work. These groups include:
Indigenous
Black
Racialized
LGBTQIA2S+
Experiencing a disability (visible or not)
I was a co-director and board member of DIFTG from October 2022 to June 2025.
When I joined the collective, I introduced the translation of all the marketing material and promotional content in order to make our programs and services accessible to the French-speaking members of the film photography community in the Ottawa-Gatineau area, which allowed for a wider outreach and more diverse audience. I'm proud to say that DIFTG is now collaborating with 3 businesses in the Gatineau area that joined the list of stockists for distribution of our monthly and special edition zines.
In October 2024, I took charge of curating the Film Friday series, which serves as an online extension of the zine.
DIFTG turns 5! This anniversary is a testament of the work accomplished, the community we’ve built together, and a motivation to keep growing and moving forward. After all, what is an anniversary if not the celebration of momentum? With that said, one can’t go forward without keeping a trace from the past. As such, this anniversary’s theme is “Memento“.
“Memento” is an opportunity to mark the ways in which moments can be recorded, how mementos can be made tangible by the physicality of film – all the while existing in the immateriality of time and community in the form of memories. While changes happen over time, keepsakes and souvenirs serve as a testament to its passing.

DIFTG a 5 ans!

With the return of Spring, tell us what this time of year entails for you. Whether it's spring cleaning (physical or emotional, shedding layers, "coming clean", etc.) or embracing the rebirth, new beginnings and fiery energy that takes place during Aries season, with the days getting longer and the world coming out of hibernation.
DIFTG’s 4-Year Anniversary exhibition, Home, featured 35 Ottawa-and-area analog artists who provided a photographic answer to the question, “What does Home mean to you?”
This group exhibition featured images of personal and intimate spaces, neighbourhoods, favourite cities, and hometowns. Using photography, artists shared how they find a sense of Home: in themselves, in their family (biological and found), partners, or loved ones, in their emotions, dreams, and memories.
Home is complex, but it’s something we can all relate to and reflect upon.
