This is my FAVORITE hike of all time. It's not the number of bridges that makes it ridiculous---other meetup groups have done 18 bridges in one day. What's ridiculous and great about this hike, are the people, my friends, that showed up and walked all that they could, most of them, completed 28 miles, more than a marathon! While 28 miles was my record at that time, I went on to pass that mileage the very next year with 34 miles on the Great Saunter. The difference is that this 14 bridge hike was full of fun: jump pics at the Crack is Wack wall, getting split up into two groups and reuniting at the University Heights Bridge, and getting locked in Fort Tryon Park! 26 of us showed up in the beginning and 18 of us finished! The hike started at 10am and ended about 10pm. The very next day, I went with a group of friends to go on a bike ride in NJ (20 miles).
A short break on the SIT bench. Highbridge Park.
Raghu walked ahead to take this group pic.
1, 2, 3, JUMP! I missed the jump as evident by my smile. Me, Vanessa, Will, Allan, Owen and Tim.
Proof that we walked 28 miles that day. It started in Manhattan where the Roosevelt Island tram (park) is and we ended at the G.W. Bridge.
Proof that we were locked in! A few climbed the fence to go get help and then we pried open the gate doors as wide as we could to let everyone out. Eventually we all got out. No one from the Parks Department came.
This was mile 27, when we all completed the 14 bridges and needed a break before we headed home (and walk the 28th mile back across to Manhattan). Pictured: Tim, Will, LiQian and me.
