Weekly Newsletter
Each week, a brief overview will be posted of what we did in class with a link to photos in OneDrive. Please DO NOT share photos without permission or post them on social media, as they will contain photos of minors, and some parents are not comfortable with their child's images online.
I appreciate your cooperation! 🌞
We were rained inside but still had a great day! We were missing a couple of our people due to sickness. Naomi and Cohen, we hope you are feeling much better soon! We started our day with a little executive funtioning in keeping our binders neat and organized to set us up for the greatest chance for success. The group is only a month in and already they are doing well at recording homework in their planners, keeping their binders pretty organized, and handing in most homework on time. We started with our English lesson and had a great chat about our choices in the book, which ones we regretted or would like to go back and change. Then we learned some new figurative language and reviewed the ones we've already learned. I am focused on helping them compile a section in their binders of "cheat sheets/quick sheets" to help remind them of important details in both subjects. After lunch we jumped into a refresher on the four operations with decimals. It was familiar to a few but many needed a little reminder of how to work with them. We also covered finding percentages of a whole and finding the whole with a percentage. Our next step next week will be making conversions from fractions to decimals to percents with ease and then adding in ratios. Noble got his happy birthday cupcake this week! We had a great day together! 🙂
We had photos taken in the morning which turned out so great! Thanks Christine! Then we got into math. It looked like it might rain but we all stayed dry and had a great day together. The group earned lots of extra adventure time by listening and working hard! We had a overall review of operations with fractions, some were working on division and some on estimating square roots. Then after a nice long outdoor lunch, we got into English. Your kiddos are coming up with some great observations about our characters and learning some new, and some familiar words. We discussed extended metaphors, symbolism and metonymy. They all got updated binders and notebooks for their reading journals. (thanks Sandie!) We had such a great day together that I completely forgot to take pictures except for this one!
We thought it might rain so we moved inside but it never did rain! We had a good day and started with math today! First we played a game called traffic lights which turned out a little more challenging than originally thought. It was a great way to "wake up" our brains! Then we reviewed GCF/LCM and a few quick tricks to find them. We moved on to our second part of integers where students had a quick introduction to using the four basic operations with integers and played a card game to practice them. We discussed making organization a priority and why it is important to our homework and in other areas of life. After lunch, we moved to English and had a great discussion about the main characters in our book and who we felt more like and why. We discussed the implications of a society filled with all of one kind or the other. There were quite a few deeper- thinking observations! Students got some new words and a challenge to find some figurative language in the book for next week! It was a great day with this awesome group!
It was a great start to the year today! Everyone did very well. We started by getting to know each other a little more and then got into expectations & routine. English came first and we started our new book. Thanks to those of you who purchased one. The kids did so amazing at coming when I rang the bell at lunch, I just know they will earn extra breaks this year! (Watch the video!) 🤣 After lunch, we reviewed what students already knew about number sense and operations. We played a game called petals on a rose, and ended our day with homework checks and a bit of free time. Looking forward to next week with this awesome group!
Watch how fast these kiddos ran from near and far when I rang the bell! 👍😄
This is a little game called "Petals on a rose" meant to get your brain ready for patterns in math!
