John Dodds Telford was born March 12, 1832 in Johnstown, Canada to John and Jane Telford. John is a Pioneer of Richmond.
Soon after John was born, the Telford family was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Due to persecution, the family was unable to sell their property when they moved to live with the Saints. They locked his front door and left.
In 1838, the Telford family moved to Kirtland, Ohio. However, soon after their arrival, they were forced to move again. The Saints, along with the Teflrod family, moved to Independence, Missouri. Due to more persecution, the Saints moved and founded Nauvoo, Illinois.
After the assassination of Church President Joseph Smith, the Telford family moved across the Mississippi River to flee from more persecution. The Telford family joined the Harry Walton/Garden Grove Company on May 17, 1851 and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on Sep 25. Soon after their arrival, the Telford family moved to Bountiful, Utah.
John married Sarah Matilda Coltrin on Feb 22, 1852 in Bountiful, Utah. In 1860, the Telford family moved to Richmond. They lived in the Richmond Fort near the Southeast corner until they were able to build a new home in Lewiston, Utah, west of the old mill. They moved in the 1870s.
"While he was closing the gate at the foot of the dugway his team got frightened and as he was attempting to climb on the running gears while the team was running his foot caught in the brake and he was dragged to death, as the team run up the dug-way and into the yard. He was found by his wife and never regained consciousness."
John Dodds Telford died Aug 2, 1884 in Lewiston, Utah. He was buried in the Richmond Cemetery.
