Philinda Standley

Philinda Standley was born March 19, 1842 in Nauvoo, Illinois to Alexander Scoby and Philinda Upson Standley.

History

Soon after Philinda's birth, the Standley family moved from place to place in Illinois, Nebraska Territory, and Iowa Territory before they moved to the Salt Lake Valley in 1852. They joined the Thomas C.D. Howell Company on June 7, 1852 and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on Sep 2. Soon after their arrival, the Standley family moved to Bountiful, Utah.

Philinda married Wallace Kendall Burnham Nov 30, 1856 in Bountiful, Utah. They moved to Richmond in 1860 where her sister, Cyrene Standley, was living. Wallace entered the practice of polygamy when he married Philinda's younger sister, Lydia Standley.

"In our poverty now we think that we have hard times. But in those days mother spun, colored, and wove the cloth that covered our bodies. I have gone with her many days and helped her carry the herbs to make the clothing. She was an expert in that line. Many of the neighbors would come to her for advice and assistance and she was willing to give it. We would make our own cheese, if we had any, because there wasn't any to bought. Many a time I have had to sit down to some boiled and wheat and some milk. There was no mill to grind it. The hardships that we realized, no one can imagine. If you tell them, they think you are overdoing it."1
