Martha Alice Carson

About

Marth Alice Carson was born June 10, 1868 in Richmond to David and Millie Jane Rawlins Carson.

History

Martha was raised her early years in Richmond were she received a basic school education and worked on the family farm. Martha married John Alfred Buxton on Feb 28, 1888, in Logan, Utah where the couple first moved to Richmond. John worked in the railroad, so the family moved to different locations such as Smithfield, Hinckley, Eureka, Utah, and Clawson, Idaho. The couple had seven children.

In 1904, John died while getting wood for the family. Martha was invited to move back to Richmond so that she and her parents could help raise the children. Their daughter Eva wrote:

"Mother was left with seven children. My uncle, mother's twin brother, John Alma Carson, came from Richmond and we left for Richmond with fathers body for burial on December 24, 1904 and arrived in Richmond the night of Christmas and Father was buried the day after Christmas. It was a sad Christmas to always be remembered."

It took some time before Martha got back on her feet to help raise her family on her own. She finally decided to move to Salt Lake City, Utah to attend an LDS Nursing School and graduated in May 1915. She continued to work in Utah but later moved back to Driggs, Idaho, and opened a Maternity Home.
