After the Southern States of the United States seceded into the Confederacy in 1861, the United States entered a Civil War over slavery. The Utah Territory was a slave owning State. However, when the Union (northern states and Washington D.C.) inquired if Utah would remain in the Union and confirmed they would, Utah became a slave free state.
Under the command of Col. Patrick E. Conner, Utah did not participate much in the War. Most soldiers and volunteers of the War in Utah were tasked with keeping the mail route from California safe and "herding" Native Americans.
