Drug abuse is something that strikes close to home for me. I spent 4 years from 2004-2008 dealing with my own addiction. I understand the difficulties associated with a drug rewiring your brain. I also know that as a user, you have to make the conscious decision to quit. It's not easy, but it can be done. That said, there are some things that the government can and should be involved in.
First, we need a strong crackdown on certain drugs, specifically those like Fentanyl that are highly lethal. Any dealer selling these drugs knows its going to kill people and any distributor caught with them should be charged with attempted murder in addition to their distribution charges. This sends a clear message to those who are selling drugs that they should choose a less lethal option. Additionally, this harsh crackdown will drive the price of these drugs up due to increased risk. I'm not supporting any drug use, but I would rather addicts have a chance to reform.
Second, we can look to countries like Portugal where there is a good balance of carrot and stick. Users are still arrested and charged for using drugs, but sentencing is focused on rehabilitation and reintegration. This is what our prison system should be used for more broadly, but especially in cases where there are no other violent crimes associated with the arrest.Â
