24. Hooked on Ubuntu & Gimp Dec 1, 2023

What: "Linux is a free and open-source kernel that forms the foundation for numerous operating systems, including Ubuntu. Ubuntu, on the other hand, is a Linux distribution that provides a complete operating system package with a user-friendly interface and a range of pre-installed software." 

How: Windows installation, some quick instructions: Download both Ubuntu and Balena Etcher to your PC or laptop (appears on Downloads); insert a clean & empty flash drive with at least 10 GB; start Balena Etcher in your computer, insert USB;  click on Flash from file> click on Ubuntu app > click on Select target >click on flash drive > click on Flash! Message will say successfully done. If MS Windows instructs to clean/format flash drive, ignore it! & close window--Windows' message may ask if it is OK to run the process, answer yes.  Turn off/on computer/laptop, and immediately insert flash drive. If it does not go to option to install Ubuntu, you will need to boot up from your USB following instructions like in the article "How to Access Advance Startup Options in Windows 11, 10, or 8"; --to go to advanced boot up on Windows from settings, according to AI, you can follow these steps:12:Click the Start button and then click Settings > Click Update & Security and then click Recovery > Under the Advanced startup section, click Restart now> it will show to restart from flash drive.

To install programs, press Ctrl+Alt+t keys to open command; then after a $ that appears there, TYPE the respective sudo command, example: Crl+Alt+T > at "john@john - inspiron - 1234: $" TYPE: sudo apt install Shotwell. Ubuntu will require your password; type it even if it not showing it; then hit Enter. Syst info: 1shw

 

Features to install to have Ubuntu behave as my MS Windows applications:

Desktop slideshow: install ShotWell, command: sudo apt install shotwell.

Snaps & Color pie, command: sudo snap install colorpie

Download Videos from YouTube: YTdownloader: not working anymore as of 02.20.24

Extract Text from Anywhere: Frog, command: sudo snap install frog

Translate and Read Aloud in any language,  Glate, command: sudo snap install glate

English Dictionary, Golden Dictionary, command: sudo apt install goldendict

French Dictionary, np-dictionnaire v1, command:  sudo snap install np-dictionnaire

Bible: KJV, Louis Segond 1910   Reyna Valera 1960, command: sudo snap install bible-multi-the-life

For running videos and movies, Ubuntu automatically will advise you to install the necessary software; follow instructions. 

Image manipulation Program: Gimp (similar to Photoshop),  command:  sudo apt install gimp

To convert text from pdf to text: use LibreOffice Writer. Writer will convert text t o editable text. 

Typewriter trainer: Ktouch, command: sudo snap install ktouch

a. Record screen (or portion of it): Ubuntu, press together: Shift+Ctrl+Alt+R key (article).

b. Google translate, Deepl, Reverso, Yandex,  as a TTS app on line! 
b. Simple Screen Recorder, command: sudo apt-get install simplescreenrecorder
c. Kazam, screen recorder, command: sudo apt-get install kazam



Note:
The meaning of sudo: Sudo stands for "superuser do," and effectively gives a regular user access to administrator-like powers--a users 

A SUPER USER: is the "expert”; the one who install, removes, fixes, adjusts computer OS and programs
User: A user is a person who works with computer applications (Word, Photoshop, Excel, PowerPoint,etc)  a computer or Internet service (Internet surfing with Google, Firefox, for work or pleasure). If you installed , maintains, and use UBUNTU, you are a super-user and user.

APT: Advantage Package Tool, for installing, removing appt.

SNAP"  The snap command lets you install, configure, refresh and remove snaps5.  

Gimp tips:
to resize image to Canvas, when a 2nd picture has shrunk a 1st image; i.e., when merging 2 or more pictures.
Drag/insert first, small, picture into Canvas > On Menu Bar: Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel.
Drag/Insert 2nd picture into the Canvas >  On Layers Dialogue, Create a new layer group and add it to the image
Click on Picture > Image > Fit Canvas to layer
Delete Layer Group
Move 2nd picture, i.e., the background picture, below the 1st picture. 

When working with pictures,
add Transparency Layer to an image if it does have it.
