Both searches yield you books by the same author: Coleman Barks

Barks doesn't know Persian or Arabic, and he doesn't have any other type of qualification to translate medieval Islamic poetry. But that didn't stop him from publishing over a dozen 'translations':

These books are largely responsible for the prevalence of quotes falsely attributed to Rumi all over social media - the vast majority of which emerged from the imagination of Coleman Barks.

Coleman's 'Rumi quotes' have become part of American pop culture, take this one from 'The Essential Rumi':

"Out beyond the ideas of right and wrong there's a field I will meet you there"

After quite a bit of research, we were able to track down the source of this quote, that Bark's has 'translated,' here it is in the original Persian with our English translation:

از کفر و اسلام برون صحرائیست مارا بی میان آن فضا سودائیست

عارف چوبدان رسید سر را بنہد نہ کفرو نہ اسلام و نہ آنجا جائیست

Beyond Kufr and Islam there is a desert plain

Not Kufr not Islam nor is there

any space in that domain.

The damage that Barks' 'popularization' of Rumi has done is immeasurable. Anyone reading these translations would wonder if Rumi was Muslim at all.

But you wont find that in anything written by Coleman Barks

Are you Shams or Rumi?

Shams of Tabriz was an erudite, wandering Dervesh. He prayed for having a companion, a soul mate to deliver all, what he taught in his life and what he held in his deep heart. Thus, he met Mawlana Rome and became a source of shining light for Mawlana's heart and his love for Allah. Mawalana became Sufi poet and thus, both of them gained everlasting fame.

مولوی ہرگز نہ شد مولائے روم

تاغلام شمس تبریزی نہ شد

پس نہانیہا بضد پیدا شود

So, try to find an intimate friend who can help you open your heart and cleanse your soul for Allah's love or the one to whom you can deliver your precious knowledge.

It's said that Mawlana and Shams stayed together for forty days and Shams taught him forty lessons.
