Check out some of our favorite hitting drills we work on at practices. Building a fundamentally sound swing requires more than just hitting live batting practice or hitting off a machine. Working on some of the little things off of a tee or through soft toss and understanding what must take place to hit a baseball correctly is key to success at the plate.
To add some validation to what is shared above, check out this video from the legend himself, Albert Pujols. At the 1 minute mark he starts to talk hitting, but at the 2:25 mark he starts to talk about tee positioning when practicing which hopefully looks familiar to the boys!
In the book One Last Strike, Tony La Russa praises the type of baseball player Albert Pujols was. La Russa mentions Albert's 3 homerun game in the 2011 World Series and the technically perfect swing Albert puts on the ball on his 3rd homerun of the night:
"...anyone would benefit from this hitting clinic that tape (of Albert's swings in his 3 HR game) provides - going back to forward (with his hands), hitting off the firm front side, the head still, the swing coming through from top to bottom, the full extension..."
Again, when you dissect Albert's swing and what Tony La Russa is referencing, I would hope these things sound familiar to the boys.
Light dumbbell weight training can have benefits for players of any age. Grab some 2-3 lb weights and try some of these exercises. As the boys get older, making exercises such as these a regular part of their training will be essential to healthy long term arm care.
Check out some of the drills our pitchers work on at practices. Having control of pitching mechanics and understanding the positions the body needs to be in to deliver a pitch correctly, is so important in building a fundamentally sound pitcher.
If you're looking to get in some pitching work outside of practice (or throwing, in general) and not sure what to work on, check out this workout.
Looking for a simple but effective thing to work on when you're outside of practice and on your own? Practice hitting off a tee taking turns at 9 locations in the strike zone.
A collection of coaching notes translated into a book. If you're a student of the game or a parent looking to help teach your player the fundamentals of the game, you should check out this resource. Every aspect of the game is covered!
