About the Program
When the National Day Laborers Organizing Network (NDLON) made the call for “people of conscience to stand with immigrants in their community – literally,” RADdies answered the call. Since September, Marin residents have been regularly visiting a two-block stretch of Novato’s Redwood Boulevard.
In December, San Rafael area residents adopted “corners” in three areas of the city. With the support of the Marin Rapid Response Network and its cadre of trained Legal Observers, visits are increased when events warrant, like when ICE and the National Guard was expected to surge in the Bay Area in late 2025 or ahead of the Super Bowl and its heightened spotlight on immigrants.
Information is Shared - Cards that are offered to day laborers include the MRRN 24 hour Hotline number -- 415.991.4545 and the ACLU Know Your Rights cards in both Spanish and English. If you see ICE, call the Hotline. The MRRN office will send out legal observers (LO) to verify and to record any ICE activity. The LO will report back to the hotline workers, who record all the information. This information can be used to get legal assistance in the event of an abduction by ICE. This is done in hopes of preventing the abductee from being transferred out of state, and so the courts might intervene to protect their constitutional habeas corpus rights.
Physical Support - Toiletry kits were provided to Novato workers at Thanksgiving and stockings filled with beanies, work gloves, wool socks, and grocery store gift cards were distributed to them for Christmas. On Christmas Eve, each of the workers enjoyed homemade tamales.
Marin residents have generously donated to support these efforts, which are all self-funded by those of us who adopt a corner.
Yard signs – Solo El Pueblo Salva Al Pueblo/Only the People Save the People – have been designed and printed and are sold as a fundraiser.
The workers are offered coffee, bottled water, baked goods and granola bars in addition to being provided Know Your Rights red cards, the MRRN card, and whistle packets. Supporters post these SALUTE/LUCHA flyers all around the areas the day laborers frequent.
