Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy
Purpose
The purpose of this safeguarding policy is to:
• protect all children and young people who attend sessions, workshops, coaching, tutoring, mentoring, wellbeing or nature-based activities delivered by Jane Tyson;
• provide a clear framework for responding to any safeguarding concerns, disclosures or allegations relating to the welfare of a child;
• demonstrate a commitment to maintaining appropriate safeguarding knowledge, training and professional standards.
This policy applies to all services delivered by Jane Tyson through Resilient Kids and related educational, coaching and mentoring activities.
This policy will be reviewed annually, or sooner if there are changes to safeguarding legislation, guidance or local procedures.
Responsibilities
I recognise that I have a responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children and young people I work with.
This responsibility includes:
• Maintaining a valid Enhanced DBS Certificate and subscribing to the DBS Update Service where applicable.
• Undertaking regular safeguarding and child protection training and keeping my knowledge up to date.
• Following current safeguarding guidance and local safeguarding procedures.
• Creating a safe, supportive and respectful environment where children feel heard and valued.
• Maintaining appropriate professional boundaries at all times.
• Recording and reporting safeguarding concerns appropriately and without delay.
• Ensuring that parents or carers understand the limits of confidentiality where safeguarding concerns arise.
Confidentiality
Children and young people are encouraged to share worries or concerns in a safe and supportive environment.
However, I cannot promise complete confidentiality if a child discloses information that suggests they or another person may be at risk of harm.
Where safeguarding concerns arise, information will be shared with appropriate professionals on a need-to-know basis in order to protect the child.
Reporting Safeguarding Concerns
If a child tells me they are being harmed, abused, neglected, exploited or is otherwise at risk, or if I have concerns about a child's welfare, I will follow Surrey safeguarding procedures and seek advice or make a referral as appropriate.
If I believe a child is at immediate risk of significant harm, I will contact the Police and/or Children's Services immediately.
If a Child Makes a Disclosure
If a child tells me that they or another child is being harmed, I will:
• Stay calm and listen carefully.
• Take what they say seriously.
• Allow them to speak freely without interruption.
• Avoid asking leading questions.
• Reassure them that they have done the right thing by telling someone.
• Explain that I may need to share the information with other people whose job it is to help keep children safe.
• Record the disclosure as soon as possible using the child's own words wherever possible.
• Record the date, time, location and any other relevant details.
• Seek advice and make referrals in accordance with safeguarding procedures.
Online Sessions
Where sessions are delivered online:
• Parents or carers should provide consent for online sessions.
• Sessions will take place using recognised platforms such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
• A parent or carer should be aware when online sessions are taking place.
• Professional standards and safeguarding expectations apply equally to online and face-to-face sessions.
• Any concerns arising during online sessions will be managed in accordance with this safeguarding policy.
Lone Working
Many sessions are delivered on a one-to-one basis.
To support safeguarding:
• Parents or carers will be informed of session locations and timings.
• Appropriate records of sessions will be maintained.
• Parents or carers will be responsible for transporting children to and from sessions unless otherwise agreed.
• Sessions will take place in suitable environments that support the safety and wellbeing of both the child and practitioner.
Record Keeping
Any safeguarding concerns, disclosures or incidents will be recorded accurately and stored securely.
Records will include:
• Date and time.
• Nature of the concern.
• Actions taken.
• Any referrals made.
Records will be retained in accordance with data protection requirements and professional practice.
