LGBTQ+ history is a key part of Ohio's story but is often underrepresented in scholarship and research. Historically, LGBTQ+ identities were often seen as different or shameful, leading to a lack of representation in archives and history books. Ohio History Day and the Ohio History Connection are committed to sharing the colorful histories, viewpoints, and stories of the LGBTQ+ community. We invite you to join us in elevating the stories and history of the LBGTQ+ community in Ohio and beyond.
This guide will provide students and educators with an initial orientation for how they may work to research and develop History Day projects that strive to share the stories of LGBTQ+ people. This guide includes:
A Brief Summary of LGBTQ+ history;
Potential History Day Topics;
Tips for Conducting Research; and
Guidelines for Developing History Day projects.
We hope this guide will help you explore the rich and important histories of LGBTQ+ people in Ohio and across the United States.
