Contacting Tribal Representatives

How to Contact Tribal Representatives

Before reaching out to any Tribal Representatives, you should do lots of secondary and initial primary source research into your topic. Do your research first, then reach out to ask for more help with finding sources or to do an oral interview. Keep in mind that many tribes have tribal museums, cultural centers, and events where students can learn more about that tribe’s history and culture.

Treat tribal representatives as independent guests and teachers. This means that you must be polite in all communication with tribal representatives. You should show these representatives the same respect that you’d show a Foreign Ambassador or the President of the United States. Below are helpful tools to help students find and contact tribal representatives.

Tribal Representatives Contact Information

The newly formed United States and a union of 12 American Indian Tribes who called Ohio home signed the Treaty of Greenville on August 3, 1795. These twelve tribes were known as the Western Confederacy. The Western Confederacy consisted of the Wyandots, Delawares, Shawanees, Ottawas, Chippewas, Pattawatimas, Miamis, Eel Rivers, Weas, Kickapoos, Piankeshaws, and Kaskaskias.

Today, there are 45 federally recognized Tribes who come from the tribes represented in the Western Confederacy. Below is the contact information for each Tribe. If an email address is not listed, please go to the “Contact Us” section of the Tribe’s website and fill out their form.
