Rescue Me Meow Meow is against declawing cats.
We believe it is important to educate the public about the unethical practice of declawing cats. Declawing your cat is harmful to their physical health and can result in negative behavioral changes over time.
Declawing involves an amputation of the cat's toes at the last joint. This practice is banned in most of Europe, some US states and cities, and 8 out of 10 Canadian provinces. We admire and support the individual US veterinary clinics who have also opted out of performing the procedure.
Scratching is a natural instinct of cats. If you are concerned about your cat scratching your furniture, there are several alternatives. All links below are non-affiliated and solely for the purpose of providing examples.
Applying claw caps: Claw caps are rubber sheaths that are glued onto the cat's nails. They can be found in a variety of colors and sizes. Claw caps can be affordably purchased on Amazon or found in pet stores.
Providing appropriate scratching surfaces: Cats will choose to scratch objects designed for cats over furniture and carpet. Some cats are vertical scratchers and prefer to scratch cat trees. Other cats are horizontal scratchers and prefer to use scratch mats/pads.
Behavioral training: Like dogs, cats can also be trained! They are just motivated differently. Check out this article on training your cat not to scratch furniture.
