🇬🇧IDENTIFICATION OF MARKERS FOR THE DIAGNOSIS AND PROGNOSIS OF NEONATAL HYDROCEPHALUS
In collaboration with members of the Neurosurgery and Radiodiagnosis Departments at the Hospital Materno Infantil in Málaga, we work to correctly diagnose the type and severity of hydrocephalus, an essential aspect for effective treatment. In this sense, the search for biomarkers to predict the evolution of hydrocephalus is fundamental.
In recent years, our group has demonstrated that, as a consequence of the alterations the ependyma undergoes during hydrocephalus, periventricular astrocytes undergo cytological and metabolic changes that lead to the production of new molecules, among which we have detected several with possible neuroprotective effects. We have also found that tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) is a marker of hydrocephalus severity, and that certain markers present in the tissue affected by hydrocephalus can help predict the evolution of the pathology and, therefore, be key in identifying the best treatment for the newborn.
