Replaying Communism investigates 21st century media portrayals of the Communist occupation of Central and Eastern Europe (1945-1990). To do this, we combine two main approaches. First, we engage in close textual analysis of media and museums created/established across CEE that depict/curate life under Communist regimes. Second, we consider how these representations of this period coincide with the political and cultural context during the Communist occupation and today. This leads to rich debates about the collective responsibility for and reckoning with the Communist era. Our bigger aim is to de-Westernise Anglophone scholarship about media history and cultural memory concerning representations of Communist regimes by working with authors from across CEE and beyond.
One of the RC project's first research themes explored the depiction of popular memories of the late-Communist period in Hungary (the Kádár era, 1957-89), in the internationally successful HBO Max television series A Besúgó (2022-). Take a closer look at this research theme here.
In line with our aims, the RC project shines a light on contexts and histories of former satellite states, drawing attention to museums, archives, and other locations of interest across Central and Eastern Europe.
