Simpson vs. Chesterfield County

November 13, 2003

Cynthia Simpson argued that the Board of Supervisors in Chesterfield County, Virginia were not including all religions in their invocations that were given at their meetings. The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors always chose from a group of local clergy, and did not believe in allowing polytheistic religions to participate in the opening invocations.

The American Civil Liberties, Americans United, and the Hindu American Foundation all fought on Simpson’s behalf. According to the decision of the United States Court of Appeals, all religions should be able to take part in such activities. Suhag Shukla, Legal Counsel for HAF stated, “Indeed this is an indication of the importance of the issue and that this kind of discrimination affects us all beyond cultural, social, linguistic and religious lines” (Hindu American Foundation).
