Literacy is important

These pictures are from a textbook that belongs to the California school district. The black and white picture of cows eating garbage, and is shown to 'represent' Hinduism. Whereas Judaism, Christianity, and Islam is not only in color, they are more aesthetically pleasing and respectful.

In Another text it has the discussion on the Mauryan Empire, arguably one of the largest and most successful empires in the world, has a large picture of laborer working on a railway track alongside a monkey.


These pictures are misleading students and teachers into thinking that it is alright to discriminate against other religions even if they know their history. By improving religion literacy within schools students are more aware of their environment while also bridging gaps between other groups

The Managing Director of the Hindu American Foundation, Samir Kalra, has working with the FBI since 2013 to help put a stop some of the biases and inaccuracies in California history textbooks. Kalra describes that the textbooks were, "Hindu-phobic and portrayed Hinduism in a negative manner".
