Look on my works, ye Mighty, and rejoice

November 2020

This site consists of palettes that were submitted to the Lospec pixelart site and received negative reactions.

I, as a pixelartist, feel that there are no "right" or "wrong" ways to make palettes. Of course, it is important to know color theory and how to translate meaningful ideas into color. However, what I disagree with is how people seem to judge the palettes without having a good example to back them up.

This, in turn, encourages sameness, as only "hueshifted" or "contrasting" palettes are accepted and displayed in the gallery, which is a big disservice to the trade. I feel that it's the unorthodox palettes that fire up my creativity, as you figure out its limitations and use them to create something impressive.

Without context, any palette can be perceived as bad.

The palettes posted in this site were sourced from the Lospec Discord server, and properly named and credited by their original creators. If you wish to use them, please credit them accordingly.

As of now, the palettes aren't organized in any fashion, so I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

2021 Update: Happy (belated) New Year!

Hello everyone. It is already seven days into 2021 and I wish you all a year with plenty of opportunities and creativity. I have moved sections around to make this site easier to browse. My holidays were particularly busy, but I have updated the list with even more palettes. Go check them out at the end of the list!

Cheers,

Hello, I'm happy to announce that as of February 17th, we are hosting 156 palettes and 44 art pieces in this site. This makes us very happy and proud of what we achieved. We have made improved the way we host the palettes as well. With this, we hope that browsing this site will become even more fun.

Also, we have changed our site's icon to better reflect our ideals. I hope you enjoy it!

As always, thank you for the support!

March Update

Greetings. Gors here! This month has seen an impressive increase on the number of palettes and artworks. We finally broke the 200 palette milestone, with 210 colorful picks for you to choose. Talented artists also have contributed with a total of 55 pieces for you to enjoy.

My friend ckelsallpxls is helping me with signal boosting, by posting under #rejectedpalettes hashtag on twitter. Every Monday, you'll see a different palette from this site - will you take up the challenge? I hope so!

Thanks for your support!

April Update

Hello, Gors here. We have reached a total of 300 unique palettes in our Palette List! Thanks to my friend @tumeo_'s programming help and @ckelsallpxls's signal boosting, we were able to keep updating this site, and more artists have contributed to the ever-growing gallery.

@ckelsallpxls has been posting a weekly challenge with these palettes, starting every Monday. Be sure to follow him and browse the #rejectedpalettes hashtag on Twitter for more information.

Thanks for being supportive as always. It is awesome to see that people have contributed their skills to this site!

Cheers,

May Update

Hello again, New month means new updates, and I'm happy to announce that we currently host 467 palettes on this site. Thanks a lot for the creators' contributions! Without them, this site wouldn't exist to begin with.

Ckelsallpxls and I have implemented new features to make this site easier to use. Now, the palette names have their own link, which allows you to share palettes more efficiently. With an ever increasing list of palettes, a way to fetch them was imperative.

I hope to see more contributions for the gallery after this QoL update! Thanks for your support.

Cheers,

Gors

June Update

Hello, Gors here. Last month we at Rejected Palettes implemented a page system for easier browsing. There is still no indexing, but dividing the palette pages will make page loading faster, both for you and for us who constantly add new palettes for your artistical needs.

Have fun browsing!

July Update

Greetings,

We at Rejected Palettes are happy to announce that we are hosting palettes from Bad Pixel Art Palettes too. This Twitter account creates palettes that challenge the notion of what a "good palette" means, which resonates with our ideals. Their submissions will be credited as "BadPalettes"! Check them out!

We host this site because we believe that these colors can instigate creativity, and thus we believe that they will be a great addition to our collection. Thanks for your support!

August Update

Greetings,

We have implemented a page system for both gallery and palettes! This will make browsing easier for everyone: we are about to breach the 2nd Palette list page! Wow!

Also, please read our Palette Manifesto. It explains everything that happened prior to the creation of this site and our goals with this site.

Thanks for your constant support! I hope we can bring creativity to you.

September Update

Thanks to the palette rejecters' diligence, now we have a third page for palettes. You can check it out here.

I had a healthy discussion with ckelsallpxls and other pixelartists who share the same vision, which was reassuring and encouraging. I am extremely grateful for the enduring support everyone has given to this site, producing inspiring art, or linking us to other artists. We can't thank you enough.

This site is mainly focused on pixel art, but we accept any digital art that clearly uses the palette in the composition. @Kanirisu, @karasudon and @torinin_'s art explores the palettes in a high-res environment, to beautiful results.

We work hard to inspire artists in different ways, and this means we accept digital art, too. Limited palettes can be used to great extent, giving them a different atmosphere than what a traditional palette would allow.

I want to bring your attention to @torinin_'s submission, however. They're the first artist who used a palette from this site to create a game, um dia no Quantum Oceanica (one day in the Quantum Oceanica, freely translated from Portuguese).

This text adventure game has custom artwork created with this palette and was programmed for the WGJ2021.

The game can be played directly from the browser here, although it is in Portuguese. Language barriers aside, we at Rejected Palettes are delighted to know that yet another new media is represented in our site's gallery.

To wrap it up, we are overjoyed to see creativity sprouting from this site, and we hope to service you, artist, the best we can. There are lots of things we would like to implement, but we are no website developers and we update this site manually every time a new submission is created. However, this is our passion and our goal, and to see the support growing constantly is an indescribable sensation.

Thanks for everything!

October Update

Greetings. This is Gors, bringing you another monthly update. We at Rejected Palettes are grateful for the surge in the gallery contributions, thanks to artists like @Anchimayen_Art, @SodorOrchid, @windfallapples and @nicholas_mozart, to name a few. We are glad to know that there are people willing to see at palettes and absorb more than its face value.

We have diligently worked to ensure the creation of a community built on respect, trust and artistic vision, unbound by things like "perfect palettes" and "clout". Of course, we all want to be recognized for a job well done - but we do not focus solely on this. Make a job well done, and recognition will naturally develop.

And because we value this natural growth over quick clout, @ckelsallpxls and I have written an addendum to our Manifesto, which can be read here. We have noted more cases of turbid behavior from the site we retrieve rejected palettes from. Behavior that should be addressed promptly. Please do not consider this as a threat or insult towards anyone, but rather a friendly reminder that actions have consequences, and the consequence is this very site.

Thank you.

November Update

Greetings, this is Gors. This 10th marked this site's first anniversary, and I am grateful for all the contributions we received. When I started this site with @ckelsallpxls, we never thought that we would get all this support. It was an eventful year, but thanks to the diligence of our contributors, we were able to create several interesting art pieces.

Lots of artists took up the challenge, and several pixelart sites used this site to create fun challenges and activities, such as FydoTiles and PixelJoint. This means a lot to us and we promise to keep up working to foster an even better community.

Thank you very much!

Gors, Chris & Rejected Palettes community

December 2021

December Update

Happy Holidays! We at Rejected Palettes appreciate your visit and we wish you a great time with your family, friends and all people you care about, whether you can see them physically or over the internet. What matters the most in this time is to show how grateful you are, cherish your time with loved ones, and that despite all odds, you persevered, challenged yourself and grew into a more mature version of yourself.

We stood together, fought together and flourished together, and this site has been our biggest achievement yet. We have no words to express how thankful we are for all the support and care you have given us. We hope that our message of tolerance and openness will reach new bounds next year!

We may update the site slower due to all the family events - they herald the start of the new year and with it, a renovated outlook on what our goals are. We hope you understand!

Best wishes,

Chris & Gors

January (New Year) Update

Happy New Year! 2022 is finally here and we at Rejected Palettes wish you had a wholesome and fulfilling time with your loved ones, be it physically or via videoconferences. These moments are perfect to nourish our human side, which is beautiful in its own right.

We added a new section in the "About" page concerning how we deal with user content. You can read it here. Don't worry - we haven't changed the way we work; we just wrote it down so that our process can be as transparent as possible, protecting you from any issue that might arise.

Thank you so much for your support, and I hope that our site can help you find new ways to make art and express your creativity.

February 2022

February Update

Greetings. We from Rejected Palettes wish you an awesome month, full of artistic growth and creativity. We have added over 30 palettes in the last month, so please check it out! We hope that they can inspire you in some way.

We have worked voluntarily on this site for over a year, but we never added things like revenue ads, as we put ease of use and browsing comfort first and foremost.

However, we would appreciate if you could send us a token of gratitude, so we have added a "Support us" page. This way you can support us directly and however you want!

Thank you very much for your continued support!

March 2022

March Update

Hello. Gors here! I don't have a lot to say this month - it has been a very busy year all around. It's not a secret to anyone that a war is going on between Ukraine and Russia, which is incredibly saddening. I do believe that citizens from both countries would rather live in peace and want nothing to do with the conflicts.

Needless to say, this will have a big impact in the world - here in Brazil we are already feeling the effect the prices of gas and food, which weren't great to begin with. This means I might update this site less in the near future, but I am not sure.

Chris and I hope to keep updating this site diligently so that artists can have this resource at their disposal. It is in such difficult times that we need art the most.

I have added 38 interesting palettes for you to use. I hope you'll enjoy them. Please stay safe and don't give up hope.

April 2022

April Update

Greetings. In the past month, we added 47 colorful palettes for use. It was difficult to keep track of them in the last couple weeks, but it should be up to date now.

While this site has been functional, it is invariably showing the signs of fatigue, as it is increasingly harder to edit and browse it. I am looking for alternatives, but if you are willing to help us out, please contact either Chris or I. We will be pleased to hear your suggestions.

Thanks for your support!

May Update

Hello, Gors here. We've added a whopping 70 palettes in the last month, and we created a fifth palette page to accomodate them. I hope you enjoy using them!

Thanks to the contributions from several artists, we started to fill the gallery's fourth page. Check it out!

We also shuffled some site parts around to make it more organized, we hope you'll enjoy browsing this site more and more. We are still looking for alternatives and/or site support, so please be patient in the meantime.

July and Mid-August Update

Hello, Gors here. I forgot posting an update last month due to unforeseen circumstances involving work and real life, so consider this as a double update of sorts. I am deeply sorry for this slip up, however I have added more palettes for you to use. Give it a check if it strikes your fancy.

August Update

Greetings, Gors Here. This time, I bring you great news. I spent a long time optimizing the palette curation routine so that it makes things easier for us to keep giving you the best service we can.

In order to facilitate the connection between the artists and the site staff, we also created a Twitter account, @RejectedPalette. We now accept submissions there! Be sure to follow it for more RPL content! We're thrilled to see where this new step towards creativity will take us.

We also updated the Site Guidelines. Please refer to it in case you have any doubts.

Thanks, as always, for your unending cooperation and support.

September Update

Good morning, it is September 1st and this means a new site update.

Last month we included 71 new palettes for you to use. They are very interesting, give it a check!

As we mentioned on the last update, we at Rejected Palettes have worked on the back end to facilitate updating palettes and increasing our reach. Our new Official Twitter, @RejectedPalette, is part of the project - if you have a Twitter account and still didn't follow it, we strongly suggest you do! We post random palettes every day, and repost pixel art from talented artists to help with your inspiration.

Thank you very much!

October 2022

October Update

Hello! the month of September was great for us at Rejected Palettes, with almost 300 users following our official Twitter, @RejectedPalette. Thanks to your constant support, we were able to grow fast and steady, and we hope to keep giving you an enjoyable creative time.

One of the additions that might help you with the creative itch is the Palette Randomizer tool! Every time you load it, the site will suggest you a random palette, which you can search on the catalog. It is rudimentary due to my limited programming capabilities and the way this site is laid out, so I hope you understand.

Another thing of importance is the palettes themselves: 69 new palettes were added to the list. We hope you'll enjoy using them.

Of course, palettes alone don't make this site: many art collaborations from artists such as @TheSpecialKarl, @nicholas_mozart, @unusacies and many other skilled artists have been added, further enriching our gallery.

Thank you very much for believing in us. Follow us on twitter for more RPL content!

November Update

Wow! It's November and this means it is Rejected Palettes' 2nd anniversary! Thank you very much for all the support and contribution, and we hope to always give you more and more tools to stimulate creativity in inventive ways.

Last month we have added 69 nice palettes to use. I know you will find some way to use them! We also got a lot of art submissions and we're glad to announce a new gallery room: the Vitrine Gallery!

This special gallery houses pieces made with more than one rejected palette. You also get to read the artist's creative process, which should be insightful if you want to make even more art. Give it a check!

Again, thank you very much for being a part of this story!

December Update

December is upon us, and that means Holiday season! We have added 53 new palettes last month, and we wonder how many Palette Santa will bring to us. That means we've surpassed the 1480 palette mark! Wow!

We hope to bring you more and more palettes to inspire you, artist, to bring life to your art pieces!

New Year Update

2023... Can't believe it's finally here! I've been super busy with work as I type this update. Sorry for being four days late!

December gave us 47 new palettes for us to play with! Santa's gift are very colorful this year.

I have worked on the site database to make this site more fun to browse. We have over 600 submissions in our galleries, spanning six different rooms and the Vitrine Gallery. We hope to see more art from you!

Finally, we will keep posting more daily #RandomRPL posts on Twitter. I just need to find more free time...

April Update

Hello, Gors here. It's actually May at the time of writing this update, but April brought us a total of 68 amazing colorful palettes!

It has been tricky to keep this site up to date, so if you are interested in helping me manage this site in some way, please send us a DM on our official Twitter account!

May Update

May has brought a lot of fun new things.

First of all we proudly announce Rejected Palettes' official Discord server. Now you have another place to enjoy RPL content. We want this server to be an extension of what we already do here and on Twitter.

Second, we also implemented Applets in our site. Those are small Google Sheets apps that will let you play more and more with our palettes. Randomizer gives you a different palette every time; Palette Name Finder allows you to search our entire list; and Bounty Hunter gives you a palette that wasn't uset yet. Cool stuff!

We added 79 palettes and 5 art pieces in May. Really good stuff, everyone! Seeing this site grow with so many fun contributions make me very happy.

Gors

June 2023

July Update

Good evening! Gors here. June has ended with 27 new palettes and 5 new art pieces added.

I wish to thank @Alisuca3 and @windfallapples for the great help they have given me with the site. I've added interesting features to the palette finder thanks to them!

We added an Applets page where you can use the Randomizer, Palette Name Finder and Bounty Hunter applets. This is much more organized than just the Randomizer link we originally had.

Also, we added a palette download feature on Palette Name Finder! It only works with some of the new palettes, and the resulting file's extension has to be renamed "pal". But it works, which is a triumph to me!

I hope that this month will be even better!

Gors

July 2023

July Update

First of all, thank you very much for enjoying RPL for so long. We promise to supply you with more fun content and palettes for your creative needs.

I haven't been active on Twitter (or should I say X now?) due to the increasingly anti-user features they have been adding. This of course impacts our community negatively, and I'm trying to find ways to mitigate it and keep us artists together.

So, if you still want to be a part of our small, but creative community, receive daily palettes and submit art to our gallery, please join our Discord server. I'll still check this account semi-regularly for archiving purposes and to answer questions should any of you have them. I'll do my best to remain transparent and accessible as possible even in such times.

We added 25 new palettes in July by the way! Very interesting palettes, I hope you enjoy them!

August 2023

August Update

Good morning! August's over and we receive the first blessings from September. In my hemisphere, it marks the start of Spring and this gives me renewed energy to keep working on what I love the most, which is pixelart and overseeing Rejected Palettes.

August gave us 89 new palettes to use, and with many options, it's easy to enjoy so many new colors.

Keen observers might have noticed that a great part of those palettes (72 of them, to be exact) were not rejected by the Lospec moderators - they can still be found in the "Pending Palettes Queue". However, they have been in the list for 3 months or more, which is extremely unfair considering that the site creator's palettes are automatically added without being subject to scrutiny like the rest. Some have been there for over a year without any updates!

Being the creator of a site should not give them extra rights when it comes to content submission, because this demotivates people. Why should you contribute to a site that takes over a year to include your work when administrators have their work added outright?

We also added a new text about RPL and Pixelart, which can be accessed here. Please consider giving it a read if you want to learn more about my thoughts about this lovely medium.

Gors

September 2023

September Update

Wow, it's 17 days into October already and I totally forgot about the site update! I'm sorry! Lots of things going on, but of course I'm still keeping this site up to date. Please enjoy our 101 palettes that were added in September alone! Impressive stuff!

I hope you'll enjoy working more and more with RPL. We are more active in Bluesky lately since managing two different sites is well... Hell.

There are many other artworks from several artists that still need to be added. I'll be working on adding them soon when things get a little more manageable in my life.

October and November 2023

October and November Update

Due to real life being very demanding, I have neglected the update section, but not anymore. To compensate the delay, this update will cover both the months of October and November.

November marked the third anniversary of RPL. For three years, we have supplied artists with a lot of fun palettes. Here are some of our site's milestones:

Total number of palettes: 2180

Total number of art pieces: 319

Total number of art pieces in Vitrine Gallery: 4

Those are very impressive numbers, personally, considering that this project has been carried mostly by Chris and I. Of course, I wish to thank many other people who have helped make this whole project thrive. Despite my untimely updates, people still believed in this site, and kept making cool art with palettes in this site. This means a lot not just for me, but for the palette creator as well.

I also thank Lospec for continuing its poor job with palette updates. As of November 27, they left 244 palettes in the pending list, with some of them staying in the cutting room floor for more than a year. Honestly it's disheartening that problems still exist in the whole palette submission process: three years should've been enough to iron them out, but unfortunately, changes only come when there's a desire to do so.

Again, I thank you very much for the continued support. As long as there are palettes being rejected or ignored, RPL will exist.

Gors

December 2023

December Update

Good evening! December is here and we are nearing the holiday season. We have added 47 palettes and a new art added in the gallery.

I'm also getting ready for the Christmas party with my family. I hope you'll have a great time as well.

I hope 2024 will bring us a lot of creative time with many more palettes to have fun with.

January 2024

January Update

It's 2024! It's January! I wish you a very fulfilling year! This first week was very busy at my day job and a lot of things have happened, but I'm here and plan to keep this site even more up to date.

December brought us 151 palettes (you could make the first Pokémon game with them if you wanted to!) and January is already looking very promising. Let's keep them coming!

Gors

February 2024

I'll be honest, this January was not easy for me. Unfortunately I lost a friend, and it's been painful to come to terms with this devastating news.

Work's been relentless as always, but I managed to brace myself and work on RPL, improving it constantly. The list of improvements are big this time around (perhaps to keep my mind busy), so here goes:

33 new palettes and 4 new gallery uploads in January 2024;

All applets (Palette Finder, Bounty Hunter, Randomizer) improved to include new features;

Database refactored to trim all the bloat, and facilitate updates;

Most importantly, we now have an official form to submit content! Contributing to our site is now easier than ever!

Big thanks to my girlfriend, who has been a constant help to me, and also to people at the RPL Discord server, who helped debug and suggest things to improve. I'm grateful for your unending support.

March 2024

March Update

Time to update the site!

95 palettes added in February. A lot of those were rescued from older prints that were posted in Lospec Discord;

4 art pieces added in February. Artists @primaroos and @nebmint contributed with lovely art pieces! Thank you very much!

Database updated to include new features and bugfixes;

Thank you very much for the constant support, now on to a better March.

Gors

April 2024

April Update

Time to update the site!

41 palettes added in March, a lot of those were 3 months in the waiting list;

Improvement in the database as usual.

I don't have much to say, so I'll end here! Have a nice month.
