Art and Design students took part in an exciting workshop led by practitioners from the Whitechapel Gallery, giving them the chance to experiment with new techniques and learn directly from creative professionals.
The session began with observational sketching, encouraging students to look closely, draw with confidence, and warm up their creative thinking. They then moved on to explore photo batik, a unique process in which moisturiser is applied to light‑sensitive photo paper before students carve into the surface using a variety of tools. When the paper was placed into developer and fixative, their designs were revealed—producing striking, textured artworks.
The workshop offered students a valuable opportunity to broaden their skills, try unfamiliar methods, and gain insight into contemporary artistic practice.
A fantastic experience all round, and one that enriched their growing understanding of experimental art‑making.
