A Level Workshop inspired by the Joy Gregory Exhibition
Whitechapel Gallery collaborated with THAT Network teachers to deliver an engaging workshop inspired by the artist Joy Gregory. Extending learning beyond the classroom provided a valuable opportunity for students to explore a range of photographic processes used in Joy’s practice, while considering how female folklore and visual imagery can inspire mark making.
After being introduced to Joy Gregory’s work, students created their own sketchbooks and experimented with marks that they later developed further in the gallery. While exploring the exhibition, students drew directly from Joy’s photographs, using their sketchbooks to record ideas and imagery.
Back in the studio, Kirsty introduced the students to the technique of Photo Batik. Students drew into barrier cream (Nivea), which was then developed using traditional photographic processing techniques. The reveal of their drawings was met with excitement, resulting in a striking gallery of beautiful and expressive prints.
THAT Network would like to extend sincere thanks and gratitude to Kirsty at Whitechapel Art Gallery for hosting and inspiring our students during this fantastic workshop, inspired by the remarkable work of Joy Gregory.
