For the purpose of this study a life history would be defined as an in depth telling of one's life story by the individual from childhood through the individuals journey of becoming a refugee and then their journey that began when they arrived in the United States.
This research was done by conducting two informal interviews with each participant through using life histories as an intensive method to provide extensive detail to their journey of becoming refugees and their work that they are currently doing.
While looking at a sample size of only two former refugees that work at a refugee center, it was important to do delve deep into their life stories to adequately represent the meaning behind why they chose to work for the refugee community.
The strategy behind the interviews was to only cover certain topics during each meeting time. This strategy was beneficial in order for key points of their journey to resurface each time. For the first set of interview questions, the researcher only asked about their experiences during childhood up until they had to flee their country. To continue during the second interview, the researcher asked questions from the time of fleeing through their journey into the United States and into the work that they are currently doing. Both interviews concluded with questions that brought sense to the meaning behind their work at the refugee center.
