Dr. Charles P. Martin-Shields (Keynote Speaker)
Dr. Charles Martin-Shields is a Senior Researcher at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability in Bonn, Germany. His research focuses on the role of technology, digitalization, and social cohesion in migration and forced displacement processes. In 2024 he published his first book Urban Refugees and Digital Technology: Reshaping Social, Political, and Economic Networks with McGill-Queens University Press, which included original research with refugee communities in Malaysia, Kenya, and Colombia.
Dr. Martin-Shields is an affiliated researcher with the Centre for Asia-Pacific Refugee Studies at the University of Auckland and the Humanitarian and Development Research Initiative at the University of Western Sydney. Outside academia he has consulted for UNHCR and the World Bank, and worked with the U.S. Institute of Peace on peacebuilding, training and technology programs. Dr. Martin-Shields completed his PhD at the Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution at George Mason University in 2016, and holds a MA and BA from American University in Washington, D.C.
Professor Melati Nungsari
Dr Melati Nungsari is Deputy CEO, Deputy Dean of Research and Academics, Associate Professor II of Economics, and Faculty Director of the ASEAN Research Center (ARC) at the Asia School of Business, as well as a Research Affiliate at MIT Sloan School of Management. She is an applied microeconomist specialising in industrial organisation, public economics, market design, and economic education.
She holds a BA in Mathematics and Economics (Magna Cum Laude, with Honors in Mathematics) from Knox College and a PhD in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research focuses on two-sided matching platforms, pricing strategies, and public policy issues such as refugee labour market integration, retirement systems, and labour market discrimination.
Dr Melati has published across multiple fields, including economic education and refugee studies, and is an active public scholar, speaker, and Op-Ed writer. Prior to joining ASB, she taught at Davidson College and Butler University. She is originally from Penang, Malaysia.
Louise Aubin
Louise I. Aubin is a Canadian lawyer with more than twenty-five years of experience serving with the United Nations and is currently serving as UNHCR’s Representative in Malaysia.
Ms. Aubin has led large-scale humanitarian emergency responses in conflict and disaster settings in Central African Republic, Rwanda, Guinea, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Bangladesh.
An expert in internal displacement, refugee law, sexual and gender-based violence, and child protection, Ms. Aubin has held high level policymaking positions including as Deputy Director for International Protection at UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva.
Recently, Ms. Aubin was the United Nation’s Humanitarian and Resident Coordinator in Niger and previously was UNHCR’s Regional Representative for the Pacific based in Australia.
Ms. Aubin holds degrees in Political Science and a Juris Doctor from the University of Ottawa (Canada). She also holds a Masters in social law (Diplôme d’Études Approfondies, D.E.A.) from the Université de Poitiers (France). Ms Aubin holds both Canadian and Irish nationalities.
