Toman is the Malaysia local name for giant snakehead (Channa micropeltes), the fish is an aggressive predator, it takes lures from topwaters to divers, and will give anglers a good fight, that’s why it’s the most sort after freshwater target among lure anglers. In this fishing package, we will fish from pond to pond on a canoe, casting lures through all kind of structures in search of a good bite.
Canoe is the best craft for such fishing method, it’s light to carry and easily glide through different kind of vegetation. It also moved silently and doesn’t spook off the fishes. The fishing area is around Tanjung Tualang, a small town about 230km away from KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport). There are many ponds there, it create a unique environment for a great fishing adventure.
When mentioned about fishing for toman, most overseas anglers will have the image of fishing toman in large dams. In dam fishing, main methods are casting toward rises and toman fries (baby toman guarded by the parents). Unlike fishing in large dams, canoe fishing mostly focus on structure casting, where certain lever of casting skill is necessary. Accuracy, distance and soft entry always provide more bites.
Many Japanese raigyo anglers like to fish on the canoe, because they prefer casting over structures. Buzzbait and rubber frogs are popular lures to use. I will suggest at least a 3 days 2 nights trip, where we will have enough time to hunt for toman in different spots, and enjoy some tasty Malaysia food at the same time.
