It could be a pebble for your pocket or a boulder you scale, but there’s a rock waiting to be found by you! Rocks can remind us of our connection to nature and help us notice our own strengths. Explore your place in the world through the poetic text, vibrant colors, and rock shapes. You might be drawn to the color, size, or shape of a rock which may evoke a memory of a location or experience. Whether it’s a rock you hold, or the rock holds you, you’ll know when you find the right rock.
Discussion questions:
What qualities make a rock feel “just right” to you?
Reflect on the personal feelings or memories that influence your choice.
What does the book suggest about the significance of small, everyday objects?
Reflect on how ordinary things can hold special meaning.
Why is it important to respect nature when collecting rocks?
Discuss the balance between enjoying nature and preserving it.
Would you share your special rock with a friend? Why or why not?
Consider what makes something personal and the value of sharing.
If your rock could tell a story, what would it say?
Use your imagination to give your rock a voice.
Vocabulary:
The book uses kid-friendly language but if you want to extend learning to include different types of rocks you could include the following vocabulary:
Igneous Rocks: These rocks are formed from the cooling and solidification of magma or lava. Examples: granite, obsidian, basalt
Sedimentary Rocks: These rocks are formed from the accumulation and cementation of sediment, which can include fragments of other rocks, minerals, and organic matter. Examples:sandstone, shale, limestone
Metamorphic Rocks: These rocks are formed when existing rocks are altered by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions. Examples: marble (formed from limestone), slate (formed from shale), gneiss (formed from granite)
