Rene dreams of creating a cafe to serve the most delicious food. With true DIY spirit, she builds her dream, hires Glumfoot as a waiter, and waits for the adoring masses to arrive. Unfortunately for Rene, the patron who does arrive has expectations that aren’t met with dishes such as truffle stew and cheddar tart. The ogre demands pickled bats and battered mice. In a moment of inspiration, Glumfoot works with what is at hand and saves the day for everyone. This modern fairy tale, with its charmingly detailed illustrations and flowing rhyming text, will enchant readers, and perhaps inspire them to expand their palates and try some unfamiliar foods!
Discussion questions:
What does Rene learn about compromise and creativity?
Could the café be in a different place and still tell the same story? Why or why not?
What do you think might happen next at the café? Who could visit, and what unusual food might they want?
Think of a time you’ve tried something new. Did you expect to like it right away?
How does the art show the influence of Please's talent as an animator?
What is the importance of all of the flowers in the artwork?
Why do you think Please decided to write a prequel?
