The Cold Death is an illness caused by spores that are emitted by the crystalized plants of Borealis. Long-term exposure to this extremophile spore is what causes the illness to set in. Since the spore first makes contact with the people of the island through touching the skin and inhalation, the first signs of the illness are physical changes. There is no known cure for the illness, though once identified, steps can be taken to prolong a person's life. In some rare cases, they are even able to make the spores go dormant, though any physical changes remain. In the end, though, all who develop this disease will eventually be turned into living crystal statues that will turn into trees and flowers over time as the crystal spores continue to grow off of the host.
Hair, Eyes, and skin turn white/lose color as the spores affect the melanocytes (this is the first clear sign of the illness, however over the years it's become harder to use this as a sign since the people are naturally becoming pale with white hair due to the longterm effects of the spores on their genetics.
The body begins to slowly atrophy
Ridetidy sets in as areas on the skin begin to crystalize. Further loss of movement continues as the crystallization deepens.
Patient will eventually lose all mobility as the crystallization reaches the organs and dies due to organ failure.
Severe fatigue
Cold Fever (the body's temperature plummets rather than rising as the spore affects one's ability to regulate temperature)
Flu-like symptoms.
Coughing up Blood once the spores reach the lungs.
Loose of mobility and fine motor skills.
Tremors due to the constant cold the body is put through
Full body Atrophy
Loss of Sight
Organ Failure
Fully body Crystallization
Crystal Growths (usually appearing as beautiful flowers or leaves)
Death - the infected host is turned into a living statue from which the trees or flowers continue to grow. What determines what kind of plant they will turn into is unknown. Though theories speculate that women have a higher chance of becoming flowers while men lean towards trees.
Lumi's progression in the illness would be considered moderate. While her hair was already snow white and her skin has turned pale porcelain. Light traces of crystallization have begun to appear on her face and body, though they look more like shimmering scales or ice upon her skin. While her body has not begun to atrophy, she has weakened strength and severe fatigue often. Onsets of an 'attack' drain all of the strength from her body as a Cold Fever sets in. There are signs of it having reached her lungs already due to coughing fits that led to blood, but no other severe signs have been noted.
As part of their graduation ceremony from the shadow school within which the Assassians of Borealis are trained, they receive a marking to identify them as part of the Sect. Unlike other markings given around the world that are in the form of a tattoo, this one is given as a frozen brand upon the skin. The graduate is allowed to choose the location as long as it can be easily hidden and is required to not make a sound while receiving the marking.
The brand also infuses a special kind of secret substance into their skin that reacts under the right conditions. This is done so that if one of them ever has to prove that they are indeed a part of their organization, they can use the marking as evidence.
As one of the potential future heirs of the clan upon her graduation, Lumi was given the Heir's Mark, which has additional snowflakes incorporated into the design and marked her as having a higher station than others of the sect.
Lumi's mark is located between her shoulder blades.
For each successful mission they complete on their own or as the leader of the sent group, additional snowflakes are added to the design. Extra rings are added in the form of small dots for successful assassinations in which they were either sent out alone or delivered the killing blow.
Lumi was diagnosed with the Cold Death about a year after her graduation. At the time, hers was the most intricate marking ever earned in the history of their Clan within the first year of being an active Ninja.
NOTE: These muses are typically NPC muses that I'll write in to flush out Lumi's threads, however, they are muses themselves in my mind, so if you're interested in interacting with one as a Secret Muse please let me know and I'll be more than willing to do so. They just won't have icons unless one of them gets popular enough. Also, please note that their names were given from a mixture of cultures originally, and since I rather love the names, I'm not going to change them. This is a fantasy realm after all. I am open to suggestions though, so if you think of something more culturally fitting, come pester me.
The first to fall. Lixue was the first of the sibiling to be diagnosed with the Cold Death and is close to the final stages of the illness. She was diagnosed with the Cold Death in her 12th year. The fact that she has survived this long is considered a miracle.
Setsu, the Crown Princess set to battle her brother Boran to the death when the time comes, acts at the main face of the family. Her missions when she is sent on them are closely link with diplomatic reasons.
Boran, the Crown Prince who will battle to the death against his sister Setsu when the time comes, is currently leading the secret Ninja society within the shadows of the country.
Ayase, lethal and brutal, she is one of the top assasians of the family and kingdom, ranking just under Lumi and Tsurara. She is, as Lumi likes to say, what she would have become had she not become sick and seen the truth of her family.
Sorano is the gentalist of the brothers. While still leathal in his own right, he is rarely sent on missions and instaed acts more as a face for the family for diplomatic meetings and deligations. He was diagnosed with the Cold Death in his 23rd year.
Twin to Sorano, Gwyneria is the only one of the sybilings not trained as an assassin. This is due to the fact that each generation required one of the royal family to take up the mantal as the Head Healer. Thus she trained under their Aunt instead, who still holds this title until her death.
Shimo, the cursed bride as some like to call her, is the one sent out on more scandalous missions. Her delicate features and easy ability to act demur or seductive in turn has caused her to be the leading sibiling for assassinations and missions that involve games of the heart.
Lethal and utterly brutal many say, even his sibilings, that Tsurara is as cold as ice. Before Lumi graduated from the ninja school he was the top ranked of the kingdom. The fact that she defeated him is something he still holds against her.
The ninth child and prodegy of the Snow family, Lumi was the third of the sibilings to develop the Cold Death. Considered a failure by her parents who had planed to name her the successor of the family over her two elder sibilings, she was abandoned and turned into the face of the family. A few years after this she fled her homeland and now wanders the seas.
Edur was the closest to Lumi before she fled the country. It was with his and Kogarashi's help that she was able to escpae Borealis. Many mistake his gentle features however, learning too late that he is just as lethal as his sibilings. He however, unlike the others and even Lumi, was one of the first to question their families dark skills.
Kogarashi, the feral prince, is the least controlable of the sibilings. The only ones able to bring him to heal are Lumi and Boran. Thus he was sent out on the missions that are deemed impossible. Due to this he was often partenered with Lumi and came close to leaving with her to ensure her safety. It was only due to his sister drugging him so that he couldn't follow her that he remained behind. Currently his where abouts are unknown, though it is speculated he is looking for his lost sister and best friend.
Soseki is the most mysterious of the children of the Snow Family. Even his sibilings know little about him since he is often sent out on missions. When he is home he remains quiet, often listening over speaking. His missions revolve around information gathering rather then assasinations.
Chione is still in the final years of her training. Somehow, through all of the darkness that she had endured to turn her into the cold assasian her parents wish her to be, she'd reamined kind and innocent in ways that are baffaling to her family.
