WORDS FROM OUR COORDINATOR

"Leading the RWD program at Joyce Ellington Branch Library this

summer was a blast! As a coordinator, I was able to gain useful

leadership and communication skills. I was also lucky enough to create a

strong bond with my tutors. This summer was filled with plenty of trial

and error, but seeing how excited my students are to come and learn

every week made all the hard time and effort worth it."

WHAT DOES OUR COMMUNITY THINK?

"We really enjoyed having RWD this summer. On program days, our library was filled with families - parents and siblings of RWD students - using library materials (books, toys, computers), we also noticed parents and students looking for books from the recommended book lists, and students and parents discussing what the kids had done during the program. We were pleased to see a lot of our Spanish speaking families participating in the program. We've also been short-staffed which affects how many programs we're able to provide, so to be able to offer this program to our community, with minimal staff time required (thanks to the incredible RWD volunteers), was really wonderful. If we could host RWD year round, we would do it in a heartbeat."

- Christina, Librarian & teensREACH Coordinator - Joyce Ellington Branch

"I enjoyed getting to know the kids and playing educational games with them. Each student is different, and I’m happy I told everyone in my group that edits are helpful advice, and not criticism."

- Chelsea, RWD tutor

"What I found rewarding about tutoring for RWD is getting teaching experience and creating bonds with the students."

- Daniel, RWD tutor

"Everything was very organized and well thought out. It was very fun and I liked helping the kids and making new friends with the other tutors."

- Manny, RWD tutor
