For Parents:
How long is each reading session?
Each reading session will be roughly 15-30 minutes a day. However, if parents or the child wishes for a longer period, please contact your reader because it will depend on their schedule.
Can I sign up for more than one session?
Yes! We are more than happy to have you sign up for multiple sessions! Please click on the Google Calendar link provided and sign up for the sessions available.
Important notice: Please sign up for no more than 2 sessions per week. Our volunteers have busy schedules and are doing their best to meet with every single student. Thank you for your understanding!
Is there a way that I can sign up my child for weekly reoccurring sessions?
Unfortunately, no. The scheduling platform we are using (Google Calendar) does not allow people to be able to sign up for weekly reoccurring sessions at one time. You will have to click on and schedule for every day you wish to have the sessions.
Will these reading sessions be held in person?
No. This project was designed to have reading sessions virtually through Zoom.
Can I request a certain book for you to read to my child?
Yes! We are open to suggestions and would love to hear the opinions of our parents and their children! We will try our best to obtain the book so that we can read it together.
What is the maximum grade level that you will accept for this program?
We will accept children in preschool and elementary school.
Is there a cost for my child to participate in this program?
No! This project is meant to be a volunteering project and all of our services come free. However, if your child does not have a device to access to Zoom, that may be a cost.
How do I cancel the reading session if something comes up and my child can't make it?
Please contact your reader/volunteer if you wish to cancel the session.
Will there be any homework assigned?
As this is not a class or school, there will be no homework. The goal of this project is to read with kids and hope that they find joy in reading.
Who will be doing the reading?
The reader, or volunteer, who is assigned to your child will read. However, to make it more interactive and fun, we want the reader and your child to read together.
Can I sign up my child even if they don't know how to read yet?
Yes! We will do our best to help them learn reading. However, please understand that we are a team of volunteers and not certified teachers. Therefore, we may not have the best approach or methods to teaching reading.
For Volunteers:
Who can volunteer?
Anyone who loves to read! All volunteers must also be aged 15 and above. Click on our Volunteers tab to get started!
Do I have to commit to a minimum time period?
Having 2-3 sessions per week is the minimum time requirement. Each session should be 20-30 minutes long. However, if the parent and/or child requests for a longer time period, you are more than welcome to extend the session! If you cannot meet the minimum time period for a week, please contact readingpig.22@gmail.com as soon as possible.
Will I get my volunteer hours?
Yes! However, please email readingpig.22@gmail.com for specifics if you wish to receive volunteer hours for a school requirement.
If I can't make my scheduled sessions, what do I do?
If this situation happens, please don't panic! Life happens and we understand. Please contact readingpig.22@gmail.com and the parent of the child you have the session with to ensure that it is canceled. We will try to have a substitute to fill in for you, but this may not always be the case. Communication is KEY. Please try not to cancel at the last minute and keep communicating with the parent and the organization.
Will these volunteer sessions occur in person?
No, the volunteer sessions will occur virtually, through Zoom. Once we have contacted you back, we will give you more information regarding training and important information you will need.
