Practice makes permanent. It is important that students have a model to ensure they are reading the sight words correctly. Imagine seeing the word "were" and every time you think it is "where." The same is true for words like off/of and us/use. Sight words should not be practiced alone. Please have a model there to help students read correctly.
Sight words can be practiced using most of the same strategies as those listed on the phonics page. However, sight words SHOULD NOT BE SOUNDED OUT. When students are learning sight words, the word should be available to see. Once they learn the word, the visual can be removed and students can practice independently.
