Multiple Means of Background Knowledge Access

About this Support Strategy

Multiple means of access allow students to access the content or lesson in a variety of ways. In the case of reading, I like to offer my students multiple ways to build their background knowledge before reading the text. By adding a table with resources before a text in a Google Doc, students have the chance to freely explore the resources to learn a little about the topic and gain context before diving into the article.

Look for

The 3x3 table at the top of the page. Click each image in the table to see the resources students can explore. Notice that the background knowledge building activity is on the top and there is a quick reflection underneath. Then, students can dive into the article.

Implementing this Strategy

Adding Resources to Explore

At the top of the page, build a 3x3 table
Merge the top row of cells and add directions for students
Add resources to the other cells in the table. Add an icon to display and then link the resource using the Ctrl + k function
Vary your resources, including podcasts, videos, textbook pages, articles from different sources, and infographics
Offer an optional reflection activity where students can share what they learned from this exploration activity
Once students have explored & reflected, they can begin reading the article
