Chunking passages involves breaking up a longer text into smaller pieces. There are interruptions between sections or paragraphs, which allow students to take a break while they're reading. Instead of focusing on several pages, students can visually see where they need to start and stop reading, making it more manageable. This support is helpful for students who need to take frequent breaks while working. It's also helpful for students who need opportunities to pause and reflect on what they've just read.
The yellow boxes appear every 2-3 paragraphs in the article. These boxes are a pause for the students as they read. Each box contains an interactive element, allowing students to engage in the text. For example, students might reflect on what they've just read, which helps with self-monitoring of comprehension. They might have to highlight or engage with the text in other ways.
Find the place you want to add the box within the body of the text
Select Insert and hover over Table
Add a 1x1 table if you want to only have a set of directions. Add a 1x2 table if you want to have directions and a place to type.
To highlight the box, select the paint bucket and choose the color you want to use as filler
Reflection
Give students a space to write a reaction or reflection to what they have just read
Good for: Monitoring comprehension
Annotation
Ask students to highlight a phrase or sentence and make a note in the text box
Good for: Monitoring comprehension, thinking critically about the text
Question
Give students the space to ask a question about what they've read. It can be things that confuse them or something deeper they want to learn about the topic
Good for: Starting discussions post-read
Skill Practice
Ask students a question based on reading skills (e.g., inferences, citing evidence, etc.)
Good for: Individualized skill practice; modeling the application of reading strategies
