A recent phenomenon in the United States is something called "fast fashion". This consists of items of clothing that are cheap, widely available, and dynamic-- but supported by an infrastructure solely prioritizing profit. These clothing items fall apart after only a few washes and then fill up landfills.
The equivalent of 1 garbage truckload of textiles is landfilled or burned every single second on Earth (source: UNCTD).
Due to their price, shoppers tend to buy more than they will wear. When they realize they don't want them anymore, it is easier to just throw them away than to return them.
Some brands that produce fast fashion include Shein, Fashion Nova, H&M, and Forever 21. When second-hand shopping, you can identify fast fashion in an item's thin fabric, crooked stitching, too-many loose threads, and general construction. Trust your gut!
The knitting on this sweater was beautiful when I bought it. However, it was thin and made of synthetic fibers that began to fuzz after one wear.
While the heart cut-out on this shirt is cute, the construction quality was not. The mock turtle neck is perpetually folded inwards, scratching my neck and obscuring the lettuce edge of the fabric. The fabric itself is also strange; it is thick but pills easily.
I've always thought of Macy's as a brand that caters towards long-lasting clothing. This sweater started pilling after a few wears, though.
The fabric near the crotch of these leggings began to wear away to the point that the elastic fibers began to show through!
I love the Tartan pattern on this skirt, but the fabric felt flimsy when I first bought it. Lo and behold, it began pilling and the fabric couldn't hold its shape.
The neck on this shirt shows the quality of its construction. It is warped and discolored from gentle use.
This cardigan is so thin that you can see the carpet through it... The hole at the back of the neck came about from the careful removal of the sales tag.
On all the major seams, the dark blue of these jeans is faded and thin. There are also many loose strings.
This skirt feels like a tablecloth. In my hubris, I bought it online without checking the reviews. I have since come to regret it. The waistband is not attached well and doesn't sit flat.
