Gradual Release of Responsibility - Direct Instruction 

At Rosewood Downs Primary School we believe in the importance of building student knowledge to develop expertise. Once students have a deep understanding of a topic we gradually release the responsibility to the students.An example of this can be seen in the model below, depicting as students become more proficient with a topic the teacher gives the students more autonomy. This is is contrast to schools that implement an inquiry approach. We believe that for students to think deeply about a topic and challenge their conceptual understanding of that topic they must have a base level of understanding first. It is difficult to problem solve on a topic that you do not understand.
