TikTok is a free application that allows anyone to record, edit, and share videos. The application pairs viewers with content using a complex algorithm. Videos made on TikTok can be exported or shared on other platforms.
Although most users of TikTok simply watch videos on the platform, the app is actually a powerful, free video editor. Video editors like Adobe Premiere have more features, but they can often be confusing and expensive to get started with. The skills you learn recording and editing TikTok videos apply to any type of video creation such as animation, movies, streaming, let’s plays, and so on.
Additionally, TikTok is one of the fastest growing social media platforms and has a massive user base. There are many different genres, sides, and interests on TikTok; not all of the videos are people dancing or pulling pranks.
TikTok is used to create vlogs, makeup tutorials, cooking videos, short films, challenges, political commentary, educational videos, and more. There are plenty of uses, check out some of the examples below:
First, you need to download the TikTok app from the iOS App Store, Google Play, or any other app store to your mobile device or tablet. After downloading it, open the app, click on “me” in the bottom right corner.
At this point, it will ask you to create a TikTok account. Like other applications, you may use your school email or a personal email to sign up. Keep in mind that TikTok collects user data. If you are concerned about your digital information, you may want to sign up with something other than your “main” email or account.
To record a video, click on the + icon at the bottom of the screen. At this point, you can choose to pre-apply certain effects or adjust certain settings such as:
Change between cameras
Adjust the speed
Add lenses and filters
Set up a timer
Select background music / sounds
To record a video, hold down the red button. To take a picture, simply click on the red button. You can repeat this process to have multiple videos & photos to edit together. When you are ready to move on to editing, click on the checkmark.
There are many options you have to customize and enhance your videos at this point. Editing is not simply about what you can do. It is about what you should do to make your video better. A good editor cleans up mistakes, thinks about timing, and ensures that important information is up-front. Because editing is such a large area, I encourage you to look through the resource(s) below:
Since we already discussed where it is used in the “real world,” let’s look at how you can use it in different classes. To use it in a class for an assignment, make sure to ask if the teacher is okay with you doing so. Make sure to explain how it relates to what you are learning.
English - Keep a daily vlog recording your thoughts.
Math -Record yourself explaining how to use PEMDAS.
Science - Create a short jingle / music video on a biochemistry vocab word.
Social Studies - Make a short film showing what life was like in the great depression.
Art - Use the photo feature to make a stop-motion short with clay.
