Race is usually a heated topic in this class. Thus the approach used will hopefully provide the student with an understanding of common oppression encountered by various groups. Perhaps by seeing similarities we can see how groups experience some form of oppression at some point in America's history. The introduction section includes a definition of terms that complicate race. An assessment will be used on the terms presented in the sociological reading below.Â
“We dead, we dead are a vaster army
Than those on land, than those at sea!...
And all our loves and hates and strifes
Still flow above us in mortal veins.” Meyer
How is this poem from C. S. Meyer applicable to civil rights? What role does negative history play in shaping our decisions and feelings on racial issues and issues of oppression?
Because of social norms, parents are possibly forced to discuss complex issues to help their children navigate through social institutions. Does a "Black" parent need to have a talk with their child about racism? If yes, then what about a Muslim family having a comparable talk with a Muslim girl wearing a Hijab after 911? What about a "White" male who was called a racist in class? Are these comparable experiences or completely different?

Slave Codes List
Black Codes were a series of 1600 local laws that slowly removed the free status of the African in America. This was the legal route to slavery as law by law freedom was removed thus leading to permanent involuntary hereditary servitude.Â

The decision to include the "White Identity" chart is to discuss the chart. In no way, shape or form does the teacher agree with the chart. The purpose is to discuss this chart in conjunction with the vicious cycle chart. In early 2001, this chart generated much controversy. Hopefully, we can discuss the chart and how it contributes to creating a defensive attitude toward social justice.Â
