The VFW and VFW Auxiliary sponsors yearly contests for students of all grade levels to encourage personal growth and scholarship fostering a better understanding of and appreciation for our country. The 3 main contests are 'Patriots Pen', a 300-400 word written essay contest with an annual theme, for grades 6-8; and 'Voice of Democracy', a recorded oral essay also with an annual theme for grades 9-12 submitted with a typed essay. These must be submitted to the local VFW Post by October 31st. A third contest is the 'Young American Creative Patriotic Art’ contest for students grades 9-12. The deadline for this contest is March 31st.
Entry forms can be downloaded from the VFW website at vfw.org/YouthScholarships. The Young American Patriotic Art Contest fillable form can be downloaded at vfwauxiliary.org/scholarships.

Isle of Tune
Fun for all ages. This is a music sequencer with a twist! Students build a city map with roads, houses, trees, stoplights, etc. Each of these items makes a distinct musical sound. Cars drive past them, making music as they go! Requires Adobe Flash to work properly. Also available as an app for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch.
Noteflight
Students or parents sign up for free with an email address. Students can compose and write their own music using this online site. They can write it for choir and/or a variety of instruments. It also has a playback feature allowing students to listen to what they have written.
