Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Raya Sunshine spent time in Mexico and San Francisco—experiences that shaped her instinctive, emotion-forward approach to painting. Now based in Mobile since 2022, she began refining her practice more intentionally in the mid-2010s, building a visual language rooted in curiosity, experimentation, and an intuitive relationship with the canvas.
Working primarily in acrylics with occasional mixed media elements, Raya creates work that moves between bold, energetic compositions and softer, introspective pieces. Vibrant palettes and fluid lines give her paintings a rhythm that feels both powerful and gentle, using color as an emotional narrative that invites reflection, joy, and quiet wonder. Her art is currently on display and available for purchase at The Lupercalia Art Society and Soul Caffeine. Raya’s art has been featured in New York City, and is held in private collections in the U.S. and abroad.
The Studio to Street Initiative transforms art into meaningful action. As an artist who has personally experienced homelessness and hardship, I created this program so that every artwork sold becomes a bridge of hope: a significant portion of proceeds directly supports individuals facing housing insecurity, hunger, and basic needs. From providing warm meals and clothing to hygiene essentials, bus passes, blankets, and partnerships with trusted local organizations, we meet real, changing needs with dignity and kindness. Whether through purchasing a piece or making a donation of any size, you help turn brushstrokes into love in action—making someone feel seen, supported, and less alone. Thank you for joining this gentle mission to give back through art. 💙
