Raya Clair of Raya Sunshine Art
Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Raya Sunshine developed her artistic voice through a lifelong fascination with color, form, and emotional expression. Spending time in Mexico and San Francisco further shaped her unique interpretation of the world. One informed by memory, place, and an intuitive sense of visual storytelling. Now based in Mobile since 2022, her work reflects both exploration and deepening intention.
Self-taught and instinct-driven, Raya began painting more intentionally in the mid-2010s, refining a personal style rooted in curiosity, experimentation, and an organic relationship with the canvas. Working primarily in acrylics—sometimes incorporating mixed media—she embraces the freedom and immediacy of her materials. Her process is guided less by rigid planning and more by response: intuition, energetic movement, and a willingness to follow where the paint leads.
Raya’s portfolio spans a wide emotional range, from bold, energetic compositions to softer, more introspective pieces. Vibrant palettes and fluid, gentle lines create a visual rhythm that feels simultaneously powerful and tender. She views color as an emotional narrative—inviting viewers into moments of reflection, joy, or quiet wonder—and her ability to evoke feelings fosters a connection that can transcend the canvas.
For Raya, painting is a conversation between artist, memory, place, and possibility. Each piece becomes a snapshot of emotion, shaped by instinct rather than expectation. Her work celebrates spontaneity, personal discovery, and expression without limits—an evolving practice dedicated to growth, experimentation, and sharing her vision with the world.
Her art is currently on display and available for purchase at The Lupercalia Art Society and Soul Caffeine. Raya’s art has been featured in New York City, and is held in private collections in the U.S. and abroad
